Nasal Obstruction
Learn about the various conditions related to the nose
What is nasal obstruction?
Deviated septum and hypertrophy of the turbinates are two common causes of nasal obstruction. If you are unsure if you have any of these conditions, schedule a consultation with Dr. Gonzalo Jimenez to find out.
A deviated septum means there is an obstruction between the two main nasal passages that needs to be corrected through surgery to allow air to flow smoothly; hypertrophy (or excessive growth) of some turbinates can also cause obstruction when they become filled with allergens.
The nasal septum and turbinates are structures located inside the nose. They are the dividers that separate each nasal cavity on both sides, while there is typically enough space for them to allow air to pass through your respiratory system without obstruction due to the proximity of these structures to each other; if they become deviated or twisted, this can cause problems with breathing because it affects their functionality for ventilation.
When the turbinate is too large, it can block the airflow and cause inflammation. There are several types of nasal problems for people with this issue, including the inferior turbinates, which affect between 80% and 90% of people with allergies or other respiratory problems, as they easily become irritated by odors such as car exhaust in our current environment.
