Which rhinoplasty is best for me, cosmetic or functional?

How is it decided what changes will be made to the nose during rhinoplasty? Will I have an idea of what my nose will look like after the surgery?
In a rhinoplasty, an initial assessment is made, photos are taken, and a Photoshop simulation is done to understand the patient’s desires and to explain what is realistically achievable. If you have very thick skin, it can’t be made too thin due to the skin’s thickness. If it’s a very wide nose, then it’s necessary to see how much can be done. Therefore, these personalized evaluations are done to see how much can be adjusted in the nose without compromising the breathing function.
What is the recovery process after a rhinoplasty? What should I expect in terms of pain, swelling, and post-operative care?
In terms of recovery after a rhinoplasty, depending on whether we broke the nose bones, there could be some inflammation.
On some occasions, there might be some bruising, for which treatments are given that reduce them to almost none after 4 days. We usually use nasal packing which is removed after 5 to 7 days, depending on the case. After 7 days, the patient usually doesn’t have any obstructions, but sometimes we leave the tape on for an additional 3 days and ask the patient to apply it at night for a few more weeks.
But in general, nose recovery takes around 7 to 10 days.
What are the risks and possible complications of rhinoplasty? How are these complications managed in surgery?
In rhinoplasty, complications can include infection and bleeding. Therefore, we administer antibiotics and medications to prevent bleeding. Other potential issues include scarring, for which we provide certain gels.
There isn’t a significant area of complication as such in rhinoplasty, but when one arises, the treatment is primarily medical.
How does rhinoplasty affect my ability to breathe? Is there a possibility it could negatively affect me after the surgery?
In cosmetic rhinoplasty, when we don’t involve the structure of the nose, breathing can be affected. That’s why we have to be very careful in how we structure the nose to make it smaller but maintain its proper function. This involves taking care of the nasal valves, the septum, and the turbinates, which are structures inside the nose. We have to ensure they retain the correct dimensions so that air can flow properly and maintain its humidification and ventilation functions for the lungs.
Regardless of the type of rhinoplasty—whether functional, cosmetic, open, or ultrasonic—we must be careful with these parts to ensure the nose always retains its ability to breathe.
What is ultrasonic rhinoplasty, and what does it involve?
Ultrasonic rhinoplasty has evolved over the past few years. It’s a very gentle procedure in which a special radiofrequency device allows us to reduce large dorsal humps, refine a very prominent or coarse nose, or transform what some refer to as an “Arabesque” nose into a shape that’s more harmonious with the patient’s face.
