WHAT IS A VOICE DISORDER?

A person’s voice is singularly unique, like a fingerprint. It is formed when air passes through the vocal cords, creating sound vibrations that travel to the eardrum. There are a number of conditions that can disrupt this process and lead to various issues with controlling the tone, volume, or quality of the voice, which can also cause discomfort.
Voice difficulties can be caused by a variety of conditions, ranging from vocal cord paralysis to spasmodic dysphonia. In the first case, one or both cords do not open and close properly; in paradoxical vocal cord movement, those affected experience abnormal closure when inhaling. Spasmodic dysphonia, on the other hand, is characterized by forced movements that cause strange voice alterations.

They can also manifest as unilateral vocal cord paralysis, a disorder that affects both breathing and speech. Whatever the cause, these conditions should be treated with proper medical guidance.

CAUSES
Injuries to the vocal cords are a constant risk for those working in professions such as teaching, singing, preaching, or smoking. Even those who speak loudly or shout may suffer from hoarseness due to colds, allergies, and bronchitis, or being exposed to irritants. This is especially important for older adults, who are more susceptible than other groups to having problems with their voice.
SYMPTOMS

People with vocal difficulties may experience a range of unique problems, such as hoarseness or changes in their voice, difficulty breathing and swallowing accompanied by coughing fits, as well as an unsettling sensation of having a lump in the throat.

DIAGNOSIS
In collaboration with your doctor, you can establish the cause of any voice problem. Your doctor can evaluate your medical history and perform a physical examination to diagnose it. dditional tests may reveal the vibration patterns of the vocal cords as part of the process of discovering the exact cause of this problem.
